Description from Goodreads:

Even dragons can’t resist a good story…

Even though Leo would rather sit at home and read, his parents send him out into the world in the hopes that Leo will become a famous knight. But when Leo comes up against the land’s most fearsome beasts, he soon discovers that scary monsters enjoy a good book as much as anyone…

What I Thought:

As soon as I saw on the first page that this cute little mouse knight was a bookworm I was hooked!

His name is Leo, which is the perfect name for this brave little dude. All he wants to do is read his beloved books all day, but his parents are convinced he needs to fight. When faced with his certain demise, does he run and hide? No! He bravely uses his most important weapon: books. And he always wins.

The rhythm and rhyme of the text make this not only super easy to read, but super fun to read as well. Sometimes when Evelyn brings me books to read I send them back to the shelf if I’m not in the mood for it… but this one never gets sent back. It’s one of our absolute favourites.

The illustrations are beautiful, with wonderfully textured pictures and a perfect fairy tale palette. For example when you look at Leo’s armour it just looks like armour, but when you look closer you see that Docherty used white, blue, green, pink, purple, mustard, and even maroon. Genius.

And finally, a list of the morals in this book:

1. Listen to your parents
2. Always be prepared
3. Everyone has some good in them
4. Be yourself
5. Fighting is not the answer
6. Dragons poop a lot
